Expanding the knowledge-base of the EAP practitioner: Developing agency through a sociological imagination.

In this talk I outline the existent knowledge-base of EAP practitioner drawing attention to where there is consensus, dissension and lacunae. I will explore the implications of practitioners embracing a ‘sociological imagination’ both outward facing in regard to the politics, cultures and activities of disciplines and, significantly, inward facing, by adopting a Bourdieusian socio-analysis of EAP as a discipline, field and professional activity. This inward facing objectification of the field of EAP allows us to see EAP in terms of key texts, luminaries, and ideas that dominate the ideational in EAP. This objectification will be illustrated using a small-scale study on practitioner discussions within their professional association, BALEAP. Finally, I will argue that undertaking this kind of analysis allows practitioners greater agency in their professional lives and helps them shape, rather than be shaped by, the structures and ideas that dominate the praxis of EAP.
